How NRIs can avail biometric based Aadhaar card on arrival

On 26th August 2021, UIDAI announced simplifying the rules for enrolling the Aadhaar card to NRIs via the official Twitter handle. The tweet is as follows

"Non-Resident Indians (NRIs) need not wait for 182 days. NRIs with valid Indian passports may apply for an Aadhaar card on arrival."

Before 26th August, NRIs have to wait a mandatory six months to apply for the Aadhaar card. Now, NRIs can apply for Aadhaar on their arrival or by scheduling a prior appointment, thus doing away with the requirement for a mandatory 182-day waiting period.

The applying process for both children and adults is the same, and it is as follows:

How NRIs can enrol for the Aadhaar card

After you arrive in India, take your valid Indian passport to your nearest Aadhaar Seva Kendra.

Fill out your details in the enrollment forum that the enrolling officer gives to you. Provide your Email address which is mandatory for NRI applicants.

The declarations for NRI applicants are different, so fill them out carefully. After reading, you need to sign the enrollment forum.

Request the enrolling officer to enrol you as an NRI.

As proof of NRI identification, submit your passport. The passport is sufficient for demographic verification, but you may also present other documents of identity.

In the next step, the Aadhaar enrollment officer will initiate biometric enrollment using Aadhaar biometric enrollment devices.

First, you will be asked to scan your ten fingerprints into the multi-fingerprint scanner device.

Once the fingerprints are uploaded, your Iris is scanned using an Iris scanner.

Then you need to pose to take your live photo. Aadhaar enrolling does not accept photographs.

The enrollment officer will show you the details he entered on his screen. Check the details carefully. Allow the enrolment officer to submit the details if they are correct.

As the enrollment confirmation, the officer will give you an enrollment slip that has an enrollment number. You can use the enrollment number to track the progress of the Aadhaar card on the UIDAI official site.

It will take 90 days to reach the Aadhaar at your residence (the usual time to prepare and dispatch for all citizens).
